2008 Golf Classic A Success Despite Rainout!

Our recently held 2008 Cortland Rotary Golf Classic was a great success despite the nearly two inches of rain that caused a rainout of the event at Tamer Win Golf & Country Club on July 30th.  Golf Classic Chairman, Jim Noel, indicated: "Although we had another sell out event of 32 teams and 128 golfers, I haven't yet heard of one complaint about the rainout."  Jim was pleased; "Everyone obviously realized it was out of our control.  We had a one-hour delay because of the first rain shower.  Then, much to our chagrin, the second rain shower came after just six holes of golf and put an end to our annual golf outing."

The Cortland Rotary Golf Classic has become a popular mid-summer community event and is one of our biggest annual fund raisers that helps support our various Community Service projects and activities.  Proceeds from last year's Golf Classic helped provide the initial funds we needed to bring the Harlem Ambassadors to Cortland for an exhibition game against Cortland's own Mosquito Lakers in a community-wide basketball fundraiser, which was organized last October along with the Bazetta-Cortland Optimist, Cortland Kiwanis, Cortland Lions, and the member Churches of the Lakeview Outreach and Fellowship (LOAF).  This combined community event funds raised $8,700 for Cortland Area Cares, our local food pantry, to help provide food for over 150 needy families and individuals, thanks to the success of last years Golf Classic.

This year's Golf Classic raised funds from Hole Sponsorships, a Super Golf Raffle offering 15 chances to win a special golf packages from courses within and outside the area, a closest to the pin challenge, and 50/50 Raffle, along with the support of all the participating players and teams.  Additionally, Cortland Banks stepped up again with a major contribution to be the co-sponsor of the Golf Classic, along with Mark Thomas Ford, who offered the Hole-in One Grand Prize.  Unfortunately, because of the rainout, no one had an opportunity at the chance for the Grand Prize in which the winner would have taken home a high performance Mustang Saleen or F-150 Saleen Truck, both valued at over $60,000.

Despite the rainout bringing an end to the event, the first, second, third and fourth place team winners were chosen by a "drawing from the hat" and walked home with some nice prizes.  The skins game winners were also determined in the same manner.  Most importantly, after all was said and done, everyone went home following the closing events and dinner, just a little wet, happy and looking forward to next year's Golf Classic, which will be held again mid to late July!

Aside from the dedicated members of the Golf Classic Committee, we would especially like to thank Cortland Banks for again being our Primary Co-Sponsor and Mark Thomas Ford for sponsoring the biggest Hole-In-One Grand Prize ever offered at our Golf Classic.  Special thanks also go out to our other Hole-In-One Sponsors, Four Star Travel, Todd Hufstetler Insurance and Tamer Win Golf for sponsoring several other great prizes for the golfers.  Additionally, we would like to thank all of our loyal and new Hole Sponsors and the courses who participated in our popular Super Golf Raffle.

Other sponsors who also deserve recognition for the special gifts and in-kind services are Jerry Carleton and the Cortland Dairy Queen for providing refreshing Dilly Bars for all the golfers.  Additionally, thanks go to Jim Woofter and the Cortland News for their excellent coverage and promotion of the Golf Classic, along with Mike Makes Signs for all the last-minuet Hole Sponsorship Signs, and Howland Printing for once again providing the Raffle Tickets for our Super Golf Raffle.

Lastly, we would like to thank all the 132 golfers who came out to enjoy the day and their corporate and business team sponsors for their support our annual Golf Classic fundraiser, as well as the staff and management of Tamer Win Golf & Country Club.  Without their involvement and support there would be no Golf Classic, despite the weather - rain or shine!

Thanks again to all who participated, volunteered, and supported the Golf Classic on behalf of Cortland Rotary President, Don Barzak, and Golf Classic Chairman, Jim Noel, and the Golf Classic Committee.

We look forward to everyone's support and seeing everyone again next year!
